Siem Reap, Cambodia; Day 2

2 of our Adventurers are now old enough to have more than a passing interest in writing for the blog. As much as T&B would love to hand off writing duties entirely to the next generation, we only got these first 2 paragraphs from CreeperKitty and then Suaram. Perhaps we shall hear more from the kids later on this trip. Fingers crossed!

Today was one of the first post days, and boy,  was it a whopper! First we woke up around four in the morning (which the kids were NOT happy about) and got in the van to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat.

After getting a couple photos in, we decided to explore Angkor Wat with the help of our awesome tour guide. Some crazy intricate wall paintings later, and we ended up at the base of the steps to the Angkor Wat towers.

This temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 5 Adventurers have seen well over a dozen renowned UNESCO sites in Belgium, Egypt, France, Italy, Kenya, Morocco, Netherlands, Panama, Spain, Vatican City, Thailand, United Kingdom, and the United States.

When we were in Bangkok in early February 2021, we saw a beautiful stone model of Angkor Wat which was commisioned by the King of Siam who had originally intended to dismantle and move Angkor Wat to Bangkok. At that time, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar were all under the King of Siam’s rule. The King eventually found this project infeasible and settled for this replica instead.

The model was impressive but failed to convey the scope of the temple and the intricate carvings within the walls.

Besides crafting a paragraph for today’s post, CreeperKitty took some video of Amgkor Wat. We just need to get the kids to show interest in video editing software and then we will be able to turn these videos around quickly and share with you too!

We also visited Angkor Thom and the impressive Ta Prohm temples. Both of these areas featured in Hollywood films which explained why so many tourists were jostling for photo opportunities in specific locations. Fortunately for us, we could find quieter locations for good photos.

We were impressed with everything that we saw and learned today and imagine that tomorrow will build upon our experiences.
