Singapore; Day 3

We are excited to be back to our full complement of 8 Adventurers after a stomach bug sidelined Suaram yesterday.

Today’s first Adventure took us back to Little India to wander the neighborhood during the daylight. While that helped visibility, it also made for a hot and humid walking experience. We trudged our way through the heat for a few notable spots and a little shopping. We were pleasantly surprised that the main streets were still decorated from the big Festival of Lights (Deepavali or Diwali) back on Nov 12th.

Little India is an enclave of Indian culture within the melting pot of Singapore. Stores featuring Indian trinkets, clothing, gold jewelry and souvenirs filled every street – well, where they could fit in between all the Indian food restaurants.

Gold shopping

There were also plenty of food markets with popular Indian produce we don’t see in the US like long beans and bitter melon.

Within blocks of each other we also passed active mosques, temples and churches, most built in the 19th century. A cool testament to how diverse this community is.

The area is known for its colorful environment. Old shop buildings which could look old and drab are painted eye catching colors. And on every free wall there are gorgeous murals adding personality and more color.

Our evening activity was spent at the Night Safari. This happens to be the second night zoo experience that our Adventurers have encountered on our World travels. The first time was in Thailand. That one was billed as the smaller version of Singapore’s Night Safari so we had to go while we’re here.

In Singapore the night animals tended to be smaller and more active. We were happy to be able to walk the trails between rain showers. Tomorrow we explore the Marina Bay district!
