Tahuayo Lodge, Peru; Day 2

Guess who’s back! That’s right – it’s Suaram, and I’ll be writing a post for you this trip. You’re welcome!

First things first, let me rant about the bugs. There are bugs EVERYWHERE. In the bed. On the chairs. In my hat. There was even a bug in my cup of coffee this morning.

I know these are gonna appear in my nightmares… I just know it

And it isn’t just mosquitoes. There are probably six or seven* species of flying insects hovering around my head at this very moment. And yeah, it’s cool to see so many diverse species coexisting in the same area. But then again, STOP BITING ME EVERY TEN SECONDS!

This morning we woke up at 8 am for a hearty breakfast (which some of us enjoyed and some of us did not). It doesn’t matter — we needed to be fueled up in order to go on our morning activity, which is something that will be pretty familiar to those of you who read our Costa Rica blog posts.

That’s right — ZIP-LINING!

One of the jungle excursions we chose last night was zip lining from tree to tree across the forest canopy. There are four zip lines in total, all of them taking you through the trees and allowing you to see all of the wildlife on the rainforest canopy.

But first, we needed to get up to the treetops in the first place.

Enter the Death Ladder.

It’s higher than it looks

Okay. It isn’t really called that. But it is a one hundred foot rickety, unstable ladder with not as many safety measures as I’d like.

There was also a seemingly safer pulley where, instead of climbing up yourself, you were hauled up by a couple of the tour guides managing the zip line.

Guess who decided to take the Death Ladder?

Yeah, I did.

Someone should put a sign saying ‘Slippery when Wet (and it’s always wet)

Once we made it up to the top, though, it was actually really cool. We were able to imagine a little of what life might be like dozens of feet off the ground.

After walking back, we had lunch and relaxed for a while. But we aren’t finished yet – there was a certain marine animal of the Amazon River calling us.

Looking for dolphins
A pink dolphin (not a pink blob)

We managed to catch a few glimpses of the famous pink river dolphins (as well as the lesser known gray river dolphins).

We were also given a chance to get in the water which Toaster_ham and I happily accepted.

It isn’t as dirty as it looks… right?

Having swam in the Amazon River, we went back to the lodge to enjoy a shower and dinner. Another rant – the shower is not warm either. In fact, it’s basically the same water as the Amazon without the leaves and bugs.

Fun times!

After dinner, we were supposed to go on another boat ride to see what we could see during the night, but a sudden rainstorm foiled our plans. Feeling a little annoyed (especially since the rain stopped the moment we returned to the lodge) the rest of the night passed uneventfully.

I’d also like to mention a certain owl that hangs around the lodge sometimes expecting to get fed. I’ve been told to stay away from it… but it’s just so cute!

That’s all for now, folks! More adventures tomorrow, but for now this is Suaram signing off.

Byeee!
